Indonesia and Australia are the major producers of white 'South Sea pearls' from the silver or gold-lip pearl oyster Pinctada maxima (Southgate et al. 2008a), that are the largest and most valuable of culture pearls. Indonesia currently produces almost 4 t of cultured pearls from P. maxima per annum.Nov 27, 2018
