The most popular emeralds are a bluish or pure deep green. This green does not have an overly dark tone. Within high quality emeralds, the color is evenly distributed throughout the gemstone. Emeralds from different mines and countries can have a differing colors as well. Emeralds from Colombia have a pure intense green color. Those from Zambia have a blueish tinged green color. However, these factors are not a guarantee of the sourcing of the gemstone. Emeralds that have a saturated and darker green are more valuable. Those that look pale or have a more icy green look are considered less valuable. In fact, those that are very light are classified as green beryl. Emeralds that do not contain more than 15% of a secondary color are considered premium and demand a much high price.
Generally speaking, a high-quality emerald will have a tone in the Medium to Very Dark range. But emeralds can fall into any of those categories. The tonal grade alone doesn't determine the true quality of an emerald. Hue and saturation also have to be considered.

To tell if an emerald is real, hold it up to a light and look at it closely. If it reflects the different colors of the rainbow, it isn't a real emerald. You can also tell if anemerald is real by looking at its edges.

Look for deep, medium tone green when you're looking for an emerald. Emeraldsvary in color from pale yellow-green to nearly black. The most valuable are pure, transparent grass green - the color that gives Ireland its nickname of the EmeraldIsles.
Emeralds are rarer and often more expensive than diamonds. When many people think of rare or expensive gemstones their first thought is of diamonds. ... But even in established emerald mines the availability of high-quality or large gems is limited.

"Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good action, use ordinary situations." Johann Paul Friedrich Richter.

Despite decades of research, scientists are still inconclusive as to the source of red color in diamonds. It is believed that the same cause of the pink color in pink diamonds is the origin of red color as well, but in a more concentrated dose. The most commonly accepted theory is that during the diamond’s formation, a plastic deformation is caused in the crystal lattice structure. Some of the atoms are misplaced as the diamond moves up through its kimberlite deposit, and the intense pressure of this movement causes the varying shades of pink, or red, to appear.[5] This lends credence to the hypothesis that red diamonds are in fact extremely dark pink diamonds, and why only one color intensity is possible. It is possible for red diamonds to be modified by the same secondary colors that can be found modifying pink diamonds as well.[6]
